Italy

Germany

2. Kreuznacher Kronenberg Riesling 16.95

Riesling from Germany has a purity of fruit and a unique slatey aroma which makes it one of the world’s great drinks. The wine is medium dry in character and low in alcohol, making it a perfect aperitif.

South Africa

3. Chenin Blanc Millberg Cellars 14.95

Very clean, fresh and fruity wine with citrus and melon flavours and a soft finish. Chenin is the white grape of South Africa and makes easy drinking, crisp white wines.

4. Viognier “the Voice” Niel Joubert Paarl 16.95

Aromatic and with ripe apricot and pineapple fruit, this medium dry wine has plenty of body and weight and will partner oriental style foods or can be drunk as an aperitif

Spain

5. Rioja Blanco Marques de Caceres 18.50

Very fresh fruity interpretation of the Viura grape. Easy drinking and perfect on a warm day. Caceres makes correct, well flavoured easy drinking wines.

Chile

6. Undurraga TH Sauvignon Blanc, Leyda Valley 26.65

Complex full flavoured wine with more than a hint of the upper Loire about it. Long on the finish and very well made, this is not an expressive NZ style, but has balance and class. Leyda valley is a cool climate region that is producing some top quality wines and this is one of them.

New Zealand

7. 3 Stones Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough New Zealand 23.25

Clean full-flavoured grassy gooseberry sauvignon. Whilst retaining the quintessential New Zealand style of zingy ripe fruit this has depth of flavour and finishes crisp and dry. Perfect with seafood or richer fish dishes..

Australia

8. Murphy’s Chardonnay Trentham Estate 17.95

Those who claim not to like chardonnay should try this peachy, elegant well balanced example from wizard winemaker Anthony Murphy.

9. de Bortoli Vat series Verdelho New South Wales 21.45

Ripe and quite full flavoured yet with some delicacy. Melon and citrus on the palate with a crisp finish. A fine wine from this underrated variety.

10. Hollick Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Coonawarra 26.40

Clean very fresh well-flavoured wine with a long finish; very good Bordeaux-style white.Delicate, yet complex and well balanced wine from this top wine maker.

France

11. Pouilly Fumé Les Griottes Domaine Bailly 30.35

Rich, full flavoured flinty style. This has good levels of acidity and crisp fruit. M Bailly’s Fumé is a classy and well made example of this Loire sauvignon.

12. Chablis Domaine Naulin. 28.95

Medium bodied, well balanced wine with plenty of ripe fruit. The wine is nicely integrated with a typical dry finish. An excellent Chablis from this small producer.

13. Sancerre Les Roches, Vacheron 45.30

Crisp, clean and dry yet full flavoured and rich. This supremely well balanced wine positively oozes class, with its refined understated flavours and long finish. M Vacheron has caught the essence of great Sauvignon in this wine.

14. Pouilly Fuissé Les Caves de Crus Blancs 39.99

Dry, full flavoured and with a hint of buttery chardonnay. This wine shows all the class of cool fermented fruit and has a long savoury finish.

Red Wines

Chile

15. Undurraga Carmenere 13.80

Grippy, well structured wine, with plenty of fruit and balancing tannins that make this a good food wine. Good with most meat dishes.

16. Touchstone Merlot, Organic 20.75

Exuberant ripe cherry fruit with a long finish and bags of character and quaffability. This has all the best characteristics of Chilean merlot, ripe soft fruit, minerality and length.

17. Undurraga TH Syrah Maipo valley 26.65

Smooth and full flavoured but with ripe blocky fruit and plenty of spice. This has the attributes of a Northern Rhone, but with a little more softness on the finish denoting its New World origins. Great wine.

Australia

18. Murphy’s Shiraz Trentham Estate 17.90

Smooth medium-weighted wine with some warmth and length on the finish. Classy easy drinking shiraz from the master, Anthony Murphy.

19. de Bortoli Vat 10 Pinot Noir 21.45

Ripe, fruity yet recognizably Pinot Noir in style. This is a good New World example of the uniqueness of this variety. Long smooth finish. Would go well with game or beef.

20. Hollick Cab Sauvignon, Coonawarra 34.15

Very traditional Coonawarra cabernet with classy claret style notes of cedar and black berry fruits. French oak maturation gives complexity and elegance on the finish.

Spain

21. Anares Reserva Rioja 28.65

The well established house of Olarra in Logrono makes serious traditional Rioja in the classic style, with ripe fruit and complexity on the finish.

22. Bodegas Valduero Crianza, Ribero de Duero 44.35

Ribero del Duero is Spain’s Grand Cru region, making wines of power, subtlety and complexity. This from Valduero is no exception, silky smooth, long and complex. Great wine.

Italy

23. Rosso del Salento Barocco, Puglia 17.95

Ripe cherry fruit with some light spice. Nicely balanced with a warm smooth finish. Well made wine from the Negroamaro variety.

24. Chianti Classico Riserva Borro del Diavolo, Ormanni 53.20

Ormanni make powerful, full flavoured wines that are nevertheless elegant and long lasting. This Riserva has big ripe fruit on the palate allied to a savoury dry finish. A revelation.

25. Barolo Boroli 76.95

Classic well-structured wine with great complexity and length and real Barolo tipicity. A great wine which fully justifies its elevated price. Great with food but can be savoured on its own.

South Africa

26. Good Hope Winery Pinotage, Stellenbosch 16.95

Good Hope is the brainchild of SA winemakers Radford Dale whose philosophy of minimum intervention results in a wine of subtlety and charm. This has typical ripe pinotage fruit but none of the often associated bitterness. Very good.

27. Simonsig Cabernet Shiraz, Stellenbosch 16.25

Smooth, with spicy shiraz coming through over the black berry cabernet flavours. Well-integrated and with a long finish. This is head and shoulders above most run of the mill versions of this blend.

Argentina

28. Bodegas Weinert Carrascal Merlot Malbec 20.75

Lovely balanced complex claret style wine with a long smooth finish. Weinert are the best producer in Mendoza without any doubt.

France

29. Morgon Domaine Jenny, Côte de Py 23.95

Mid weight with ripe well structured fruit and a strong finish, this is classic Morgon, full for Beaujolais yet well balanced and charming.

30. Nuits St Georges “Aux Crots” Gachot Monot 64.15

Ripe and full flavoured with good balance and length. Complex and delicious. This is drinking now but will repay keeping for some years. Classic Pinot!

31. Coutelin Merveille 2003 St Estèphe Medoc Bordeaux 48.45

Full flavoured and stylish example of this “big” vintage. Classy and well made.

Sparkling Wine & Champagne

33. Sacred Hill Brut, Australia 16.55

Quite full on the mouth with plenty of mousse although not too gassy. Quite rounded as well with plenty of fruit coming through. A fine aussie sparkler.

34. Champagne Blanche Lepage Brut 37.95

Clean fresh and vivacious, this has good fruit levels with a mouthwatering twist of acidity in the background. The finish is clean and dry. A great glass of fizz!

35. Cuvée de Redempteur Claude Dubois 54.75

Ripe and rounded with hints of citrus and biscuits, clean full flavoured with a liveliness that belies its years. An excellent wine that would not disgrace any occasion. Produced from 70% Pinot Noir with 30% Chardonnay.

36. Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin Brut 62.00

Rounded, soft, elegant and easy to drink. This is a firm favourite at many of the best parties!

Dessert Wine

37. Hollick The Nectar Late Harvest Riesling 25.65 Glass ~ 7.50

Made entirely from botrytised Riesling grapes grown in Coonawarra, the Nectar is a sensation. Rich, very sweet, yet finely balanced with clean acditiy. Great wine.
